What is a SHA-256 checksum?

Updated 26 October 2026

A SHA-256 checksum is a short fingerprint calculated from a file. If even one byte changes, the fingerprint changes completely.

Why it matters when you use a bootable USB drive

Compare the checksum of your downloaded ISO with the one published by the project to confirm that the download is complete and unchanged. Run sha256sum file.iso to calculate it.
