How Linux file permissions work

Updated 26 October 2026

Each file has permissions for its owner, its group and everyone else. Each group can be allowed to read, write or execute.

Why it matters when you use a bootable USB drive

If you see Permission denied, the file is probably owned by another user. Use ls -l to look, and chmod or sudo to fix it.
