Ordering and payment
How do I buy from Linuxonusb.com?
Pick a product, press Buy on eBay and the live eBay listing opens. You choose your option, enter your delivery details and pay at eBay checkout, so the whole purchase is protected by eBay's buyer protection.
Which payment methods can I use?
Payment is handled at eBay checkout. eBay commonly offers major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express), PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay. The exact methods shown depend on your country and account, so check them at checkout.
Is checkout secure?
Yes. You never enter card details on linuxonusb.com. Payment is taken on eBay's own secure checkout, and eBay's buyer protection terms are shown on each listing.
Why are prices shown in Australian dollars?
Our listings are priced in AUD. eBay displays the converted amount in your own currency at checkout, using its own exchange rate.
Can I buy more than one item?
Yes. Add items from our eBay store to your eBay cart. Some sellers on eBay combine postage for multiple items; check the delivery terms on the listing.
Delivery and returns
Do you ship internationally?
We sell to buyers in many countries through eBay. Available destinations, delivery times and postage costs are displayed on each listing and in checkout for your address.
How long will delivery take?
Delivery times depend on your location and the postage option you select at checkout. The estimate shown on the eBay listing is the most accurate guide.
What is the returns policy?
Returns terms are set out on each eBay listing, along with eBay Money Back Guarantee details where they apply. Please read them before you buy.
Can I track my order?
Yes. Once your order ships, tracking details are available through your eBay account under Purchases.
Using your USB drive
What is a bootable USB drive?
It is a USB drive prepared so a computer can start from it. You can use it to try an operating system, install it, repair a computer or run a tool, without relying on the computer's own disk.
How do I start my computer from the USB drive?
Plug it in, restart the computer and press the boot menu key as it starts. Common keys are Esc, F2, F10, F12 and Del. Our boot menu keys by brand guide lists them for Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer and others.
Will it work on my computer?
Most computers from the last 15 years can start from USB. Compatibility depends on your hardware and firmware settings, so check the listing details or message us on eBay if you are unsure.
Do I need to install anything on my computer?
No. Live mode runs the system from the drive without changing your computer. Installing is optional and can be done from the same drive.
What is the difference between live mode and installing?
Live mode lets you try the system straight from the USB. Installing copies it onto the computer's disk so it runs faster and keeps your files and settings.
What is persistence?
Persistence lets a live USB or SD card keep your files, settings and installed apps between restarts. Listings that include it say so in the title.
Does Linux work with Secure Boot?
Many popular distributions such as Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Fedora support Secure Boot. Some others need it switched off in your firmware settings. See our Secure Boot guide.
Can I run Linux alongside Windows?
Yes, this is called dual booting. Back up first and read our dual boot guide for the safe steps.
My USB drive does not show in the boot menu. What now?
Try another USB port directly on the computer, check the boot order in BIOS or UEFI, and make sure you choose the UEFI entry on newer machines. Our troubleshooting guide covers more fixes.
Choosing the right system
Which Linux is best for beginners?
Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Zorin OS are widely recommended for newcomers because they have friendly installers and familiar desktops.
Which Linux is best for an old laptop?
Lightweight systems such as Linux Mint Xfce, Lubuntu and Debian with LXDE or LXQt are built to run well on older hardware.
What does LTS mean?
LTS stands for long term support. An LTS release receives updates for several years, so it suits people who want stability.
Can I use my usual software on Linux?
Many everyday apps have Linux versions or good alternatives. Browsers, office suites, media players and image editors are all available.
Is Linux safe to use?
Linux is widely used on servers and desktops and receives regular security updates. As with any system, keep it updated and download software from trusted sources.
