What are hidden files and dotfiles?

Updated 26 October 2026

Files whose names start with a dot, such as .bashrc, are hidden by default. They store settings for your programs and your desktop.

Why it matters when you use a bootable USB drive

Back up your dotfiles to keep your settings across reinstalls. In a file manager, press Ctrl+H to show or hide them.
