What is Flatpak?

Updated 26 October 2026

Flatpak is a way of packaging desktop applications so they run the same on many distributions. Each app is kept in a sandbox with its own set of libraries.

Why it matters when you use a bootable USB drive

It gives you newer apps on a stable system and works well on immutable distributions. Flathub is the main place to find Flatpak apps.
